2008 - Top Commentators Award

We are now in 2009, a new year that hopefully brings positive different in us. As an author of http://paradoxanas.blogspot.com, I'm really happy that this blog has stayed for 8 months, and yet until now there are 22600+ visits on the page. I really appreciate all your help in order to make a unique blogs. My focus is not a personal blog itself, but to put everything inside a blog.

For 2009, I target to post more about blogging tools (widgets, templates), tips and reviews (interesting stuffs, software, online webpages), helpful articles (doing best in interview, how to fulfil ample holiday time, universities ranking), and information about making money online (adsense, affliate, forum, survey etc). I will also continue giving information on gen 52k. The personal stuff is maybe about Canada, ICPU and all that kind of stuffs.

As this blog grows, I would like to appreciate all my commentators who give comments, remarks in the comment box. Your comment helps me a lot. As a token of appreciation, I list out all the commentators name and profile links (for top ten only).

I use the Top Commentators Widget to identify this. However, there two people who wins the THE TOP COMMENTATOR AWARD from this blog - so I would consider both (-syaima~ and Liyana) as the winner. I'll put the top ten commentators blog link in the navigation box. Thank you to all of you! Thanks to all the visitors!

Is your name listed there? Do comment and give remarks.

Salam Maal Hijrah 1430H and Happy New Year 2009!

Typing Race - Check and enhance your typing speed!

I was recommended by my uncle and I recommend to you to try these racing tracks to check and enhance your typing speed.

It is very fun!

Reasons why you need to explore this:

1. Check your typing speed
2. Enhance your typing speed
3. Take less time in chatting and writing online
4. Do better in programming and assignment/project writing
5. Have a fun and release tension

Go to http://play.typeracer.com

You can choose to sign up or just become an unknown guest, to practice (improve your typing skills on your own), race against others (get matched up with random opponents), race with friends (invite your friends to a private race with chat), and join a private race (accept a friend's invitation).

You have to type a quote from a song given or from book etc -- can enhance your lyric memorization as well -- and you're speed will be calculated. It will be calculated in words per minute with account on accuracy.

What interesting in this site is when you start racing, you can race with someone who appears within seconds when you start (looks screenshot). You may compare your speed with them. Try 'em. Very fun and interesting!

Why don't you give it a try? And, if you want to boost your typing skill, you can do so in the comment box.

Facebook Typing Race

This one is great to compare your typing speed with your fellow facebook friends. You'll get your median report on how you're doing.

myLot - Discuss anything while earning money

There are many ways to make money online, and some people still wonder how to gain money online. MyLot is an online discussion board where you will be paid for participating in the discussion. It is about anything, everything, that you wonders about, you can ask in the board. You can start your own threads, asking questions or explanation, reply to those already existing, or comments to others problems. From either way, you'll gain money.

Take a look at the snapshot:

I heard this from my friend, and when I participate in the discussion board, I found that money is not my priority in the discussion but to share knowledge and gain something from it.

This opportunity is great for those who have lot of idle or ample times which can be used to share knowledge.

For those who just taking SPM, or have a long holiday, it's also best for you because you can start writing in English and improve your language.

Some of the tips from me is:

-Start new discussions, don't only reply to others
-Don't post a short message like one line message, try to write at least 2 or 3 lines
-Be as descriptive as possible (this is mentioned in every discussion in myLot)
-Avoid grammatical errors and abbreviations
-Don't skip the tag step (you'll asked to tag your post when posting)
-Be polite, great others with names
-Post quality stuff

You'll gain money from your post (maybe only 0.01 USD for a post), and if it is rated positive, you'll gain higher (maybe doubled), and if you are marked as best response, you'll gain even higher (maybe 5 times more). Now, you're on your way to share, gain knowledge and also gain money. Happy Holiday, Happy Go Lucky, Happy myLotting!

Dropbox - Syncs, back-up, share files easily!

Seriously I don't like transferring files through ym with its "Send File" built in ym. In slow connection, transferring could not occur, or sometimes, one of the user may see
it progressing but another person see it already cancelled (in conclusion, very confusing).

Dropbox is a freeware application and web service Dropbox that can synchronize between internet and computer. A Dropbox folder will be created on a folder on the hard drive after the installation. Any file you put inside that folder will automatically be synced and monitored for changes, and each time a change is saved, it backs up and syncs the file again. Even better, Dropbox does revision history, so if you accidentally saved a file and wanted to revert to an old version or deleted a file, Dropbox can recover any previous version.

(screenshot from my dropbox folder)

After I renamed the Anas' Final to Anas' Final Test, the dropbox in the internet also changed:

(screenshot from my internet browser)

Dropbox has helped me a lot through transferring the file, and uploading in a slow bandwidth internet connection, yet I recommend all of you to try (Why don't you give it a try!). To share I only need to copy public link from the folder in my computer and paste it wherever I want where people can download files directly - example - OUAC & non-OUAC research.doc. The only thing that I suggest the Dropbox to modify is having a widget like in Box.net, then it will be perfectly awesome.

I also found a very meaningful article/research/survey from Macleans.ca;

Which school do the experts think is tops?
By Mary Dwyer | November 10th, 2008 | 7:20 am

Results of Maclean's university reputational survey

University-bound students are keen to learn as much as possible before deciding which university to attend, quizzing those who may have an opinion worth listening to. Take those opinions and multiply them hundreds of times over and you have the idea behind Maclean’s reputational survey. What do those whose professions put them in a position to form opinions—both about how well universities are meeting the needs of students and how ready their graduates are to embark on successful careers—really think?

To find out what the professionals think about the state of post-secondary education in Canada, Maclean’s solicited the opinion of nearly 12,000 individuals across the country, asking for their views on quality, innovation and leadership at Canadian universities.

Those surveyed included university officials at each ranked institution, high-school principals and guidance counsellors from every province and territory, the heads of a wide variety of national and regional organizations, plus CEOs and recruiters at corporations large and small.

Respondents were asked to rate Canada’s universities in three categories: Highest Quality, Most Innovative, and Leaders of Tomorrow. Best Overall represents the sum of the scores for all three categories. The survey form reminds participants that Maclean’s does not expect them to be familiar with every university, and that we are asking them to provide their views only on those universities about which they have an informed opinion.

The reputational survey has a regional as well as a national component that divides the country into four key areas: the western provinces, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. All respondents completed a national survey; university officials, principals and guidance counselors also completed regional ones, allowing them the opportunity to focus on the region they know best. The national and regional surveys are combined to produce the final results.

This year, a new name was added to the survey list: the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Founded in 2003, UOIT’s relative youth precludes it from yet being included in our overall ranking, but its results on the national reputational ranking are included here in the interest of prospective students. UOIT’s results were no included, however, when the reputational indicator score was calculated as part of the overall rankings.

The reputational survey achieved an overall response rate of 7.1 per cent. Broken out by groups, the response rates were: 26.2 per cent for university officials; 4.9 per cent for high-school principals and guidance counsellors; 5.2 per cent for CEOs, corporate recruiters and heads of organizations.

My Last Duchess - a poem by Robert Browning

(Figure 1: Picture of Robert Browning, embed from Associatedcontent.com)

This is the poem that come out in English 3U final exam. We never learned this poem before, and in 30 minutes allocated for the poem (15 minutes left for me), we have to understand all the contents. Most of us leaves blanks as the answers. How about you if given this questions? Try to understand.

My Last Duchess - a poem by Robert Browning

That's my last duchess painted on the wall,
Looking as if she were alive. I call
That piece a wonder, now: Frà Pandolf's hands
Worked busily a day, and there she stands.
Will't please you sit and look at her? I said
"Frà Pandolf" by design, for never read
Strangers like you that pictured countenance,
The depth and passion of its earnest glance,
But to myself they turned (since none puts by
The curtain I have drawn for you, but I)
And seemed as they would ask me, if they durst,
How such a glance came there; so, not the first
Are you to turn and ask thus. Sir, 'twas not
Her husband's presence only, called that spot
Of joy into the Duchess' cheek: perhaps
Frà Pandolf chanced to say "Her mantle laps
"Over my lady's wrist too much," or "Paint
"Must never hope to reproduce the faint
"Half-flush that dies along her throat": such stuff
Was courtesy, she thought, and cause enough
For calling up that spot of joy. She had
A heart how shall I say? too soon made glad,
Too easily impressed; she liked whate'er
She looked on, and her looks went everywhere.
Sir, 'twas all one! My favor at her breast,
The dropping of the daylight in the West,
The bough of cherries some officious fool
Broke in the orchard for her, the white mule
She rode with round the terrace all and each
Would draw from her alike the approving speech,
Or blush, at least. She thanked men good! but thanked
Somehow I know not how as if she ranked
My gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name
With anybody's gift. Who'd stoop to blame
This sort of trifling? Even had you skill
In speech which I have not to make your will
Quite clear to such an one, and say, "Just this
"Or that in you disgusts me; here you miss,
"Or there exceed the mark" and if she let
Herself be lessoned so, nor plainly set
Her wits to yours, forsooth, and make excuse,
E'en then would be some stooping; and I choose
Never to stoop. Oh sir, she smiled, no doubt,
Whene'er I passed her; but who passed without
Much the same smile? This grew; I gave commands;
Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands
As if alive. Will't please you rise? We'll meet
The company below, then. I repeat,
The Count your master's known munificence
Is ample warrant that no just pretense
Of mine for dowry will be disallowed;
Though his fair daughter's self, as I avowed
At starting, is my object. Nay we'll go
Together down, sir. Notice Neptune, though,
Taming a sea-horse, thought a rarity,
Which Claus of Innsbruck cast in bronze for me!

Some questions: Explain the characters of the Duke and the Duchess and gives evidence from the text. Identify three literary devices used in the poem and defines.

If you don't understand even a single piece of the poem, don't worry. I think the same. If you feel bored looking at the stuff, the same goes to me.

Tips: One of the central techniques of modern literature is the “unreliable narrator.” We saw this technique earlier in the semester in the short story “The Tell Tale Heart,” where the narrator was in fact an insane killer. The first writer to use this technique was Robert Browning in his pivotal poem “The Last Duchess.” The Duke, who is the narrator of the ‘story’ seems at first to be such a nice man. But as the story unfolds we begin to see that he is in fact a control freak that will not allow his wife out of his sight, is jealous of the simplest act of kindness offered her, and eventually has her killed in cold blood. It was a challenging poem, to be sure, and required an understanding not only of English, but of human motivation.
